The Faux-Nuts became a major hit for those who, due to severe allergy to it, could not have terran peanuts. Well, someone decided to make a very common, delicious, treat with the faux nuts and the havenworlder-safe chocolate (Carob). Fauxnut-filled carob candies with little designs on the candy shells.

(My friend is deathly allergic to peanuts, but she's always wanted to taste what recies pieces tasted like, or peanut butter filled M&Ms were like. She can't, but she said they look really good.)

There had been other advancements before the faux-nuts. Artificial flavourings mimicking the taste but not the allergen had been used in food products before. There was even a marginally acceptable simulacrum of the humble peanut for those moments where they were important for the aesthetics of a dish.

And, like all things artificial, there were people who could tell the difference, and people who are sensitive to some of the chemicals in the makeup thereof.

When the faux-nuts were cleared for general consumption, they were an immediate hit. Several restaurants catering to the Havenworlders and the allergic alike bragged that they had them. Gardens everywhere soon dedicated a patch to growing the faux-nuts.

And those of us with peanut and tree nut allergies? (Well this is more about the tree nuts than peanuts, but STILL) Almond Oil IS IN EVERYTHING. Lip balm, shampoo/conditioner, body wash, scented body sprays, hand lotion, some make ups, and MORE. And there are no warnings. I use something with Almond Oil - my skin goes red, I feel like it's on fire, and I ITCH. FOR DAYS. Taking another shower and scrubbing does not stop the itch. It is massive antihistamine doses and strong corticosteroid creams for DAYS time. (And there's some things that are starting to have macadamia oils, cashew, etc. Which I am also allergic to!)

And some things that used to be safe aren't anymore! And they don't say anything. So even if I think it's 'safe' I still have to read the ingredient's list and try to spot the allergen in a muddled paragraph of chemicals and too small writing. And some companies don't use 'normal' language, so you have to learn the chemical/fake names too so you don't buy something that might trigger a reaction.

Don't get me started on foods. Things that used to be safe, because they had a higher chance of not having have allergens in them? Not safe anymore! Frosted Flakes now makes a kind with almonds, smarties make a kind with almonds too now. So the chances of cross-contamination is now so fucking high that I've had to give up some stuff.

Also - M&Ms? Not almond or peanut free, even if it says they are. They use oils in the shells, even the 'chocolate only' ones, that are made with nuts. Trust me I know. (so much throwing up and antihistamines were needed, jfc)

(Having to stab yourself with an epi-pen is horrible. Gives you 15ish minutes to get to the ER before the allergic reactions come back and try to kill you again. Mandatory 4-8 hour stays in the ERs also suck. Blergh.)

Yay, nuts!

It’s official: as of today, my son is no longer allergic to tree nuts or coconuts. Peanuts, unfortunately, are still on the no-go list, and are likely to remain there for the rest of his life, but he’s gone from a kid with a laundry list of allergies as a baby to just peanuts as a nearly-teenager and, even better, he’s managed to do it without ever having any reactions to anything stronger than a…

I'm standing here in the grocery store but I'm too excited to wait:

I just called Hostess re: one of their holiday cakes and Factory 2100 IS NOW FREE OF PEANUTS AND TREE NUTS! That's their main factory!! So 2100, 2300, and 2400 are all safe now for peanut and tree nut* allergies!!

(Note: always call and confirm these things yourself, but I had to share the good news!)

*Okay, 2100 still has coconut, which some allergists consider a tree nut. But my severely allergic kid's allergist has said he's okay with coconut cross-contamination.
